EV Maintenance Schedule: What You Can Skip and What You Can’t

EVs need far less servicing — but one item gets worse precisely because you use the part less. Here's the full schedule, and the two things to put in your calendar today.

The pitch is that EVs barely need servicing, and it’s mostly true. No oil, no spark plugs, no timing belt, no exhaust, no transmission fluid. Owners spend roughly 40% less on maintenance than petrol owners do.

The trouble is what people hear: nothing. And a handful of the things an EV still needs are exactly the things that get skipped, because they don’t announce themselves — including one that gets worse precisely because you’re using the part less.

What you genuinely never do again

Gone entirely, on every full EV:

  • Oil changes and oil filters
  • Spark plugs and ignition tune-ups
  • Timing belts
  • Exhaust and catalytic converter work
  • Fuel filters, fuel pumps, injectors
  • Transmission fluid services (most EVs use a single-speed reduction gear that’s sealed or inspected rather than serviced)
  • Brake pads, in most ownership periods — regenerative braking does most of the slowing

That list is the entire basis of the maintenance saving, and it’s real. Over five years it’s worth roughly $3,000 against a comparable petrol car — one of the two categories where the EV wins outright in our EV vs gas cost comparison.

The brake fluid paradox

This is the one nobody expects, and it’s the most important item in this guide.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air over time. In a petrol car, hard braking regularly heats the fluid enough to drive off trace moisture, which slows the problem down.

In an EV, regenerative braking handles most deceleration, so the friction brakes are barely used and the fluid rarely gets hot. Moisture accumulates instead of being boiled off. The component you use less needs its fluid changed on schedule more strictly, not less.

Water in brake fluid lowers the boiling point and corrodes the system from the inside. And the day you find out is the day you need the friction brakes hard — an emergency stop, a steep descent, exactly the moment regen alone isn’t enough.

Intervals vary: some manufacturers specify two years, others four years or 48,000 miles. Check your own manual and treat it as a fixed date, not a mileage that’ll come around eventually.

The brake fluid paradox applies just as much to a truck this size, and arguably matters more given how rarely the physical brakes get used.

The related problem: seized calipers

Same root cause. Brakes that are rarely used allow rust to build on rotors and calipers to stiffen from disuse. Manufacturers now explicitly recommend annual inspection and cleaning of calipers and rotors for exactly this reason — Chevrolet’s EV maintenance guidance calls it out directly.

A useful habit costing nothing: once a week or so, do a few firm stops using the friction brakes rather than coasting to a halt on regen. It keeps the surfaces clean and the mechanism moving. In wet or coastal climates it matters more.

Tyres: your biggest running cost now

With the engine bills gone, tyres become the largest recurring maintenance expense — and EVs are hard on them. They’re typically 20–30% heavier than comparable petrol cars, and instant torque adds wear the moment you pull away.

Rotation every 6,000 to 8,000 miles is the single highest-value habit in EV maintenance. Skipping it doesn’t just cost you tyres early; uneven wear also costs efficiency, which means range.

Two things worth knowing when you replace them:

  • EV-specific tyres exist and are built for the weight and torque, often with lower rolling resistance and quieter tread. They typically cost more and are usually worth it.
  • Buy where rotation is included. Free lifetime rotation and road hazard cover is worth real money across the life of the car, and it removes the excuse for skipping.

Check pressures monthly. Underinflation costs range in every season, and in winter — when pressure falls with temperature and you’re already losing range to the cold — it compounds.

Four things owners skip and shouldn’t

Brake fluid. Covered above. It’s invisible, the brakes feel fine, and the interval passes unnoticed because there’s no oil change appointment to attach it to.

Cabin air filter. Same filter, same dust, same clogging as a petrol car. A blocked one makes your HVAC work harder — and in an EV, HVAC draws directly from the battery, so a clogged filter costs range as well as air quality.

Software updates. Unique to EVs and genuinely consequential. Updates frequently include battery management refinements, charging improvements and thermal control changes. Deferring them for months isn’t neutral.

The annual inspection. With no oil change forcing an annual visit, plenty of EVs go two or three years without a professional looking underneath. Suspension bushings, half-shaft boots, coolant levels and brake condition all still need eyes on them.

Where to get it serviced

Routine EV work — tyres, filters, brake fluid, inspections — is ordinary mechanical work that most independent shops can do competently and more cheaply than a dealer.

Anything involving the high-voltage system is different. Battery, motor, inverter, charging hardware and the thermal management system require specific training and equipment, and are genuinely dangerous to work on without either. That work belongs with a dealer or a certified EV specialist.

A practical split: independent shop for the routine schedule, dealer for anything high-voltage, warranty-related or diagnostic. Keep records from both — service history matters more on resale for an EV than most people expect, and it pairs with the battery health documentation buyers now ask for. Battery care is not maintenance

Worth separating, because they get conflated. There is nothing to service on the battery pack itself — no fluid to change, no filter, no adjustment. What extends its life is how you use it day to day.

The one habit that matters most: make AC charging your default and reserve DC fast charging for trips. Beyond that: avoid leaving the car parked at extremes of charge for long periods, park in shade in hot climates, and let the car precondition before fast charging in the cold. None of these appear on a service schedule and all of them matter more than most items that do.

Frequently asked questions

Do EVs need an annual service if nothing is due? Yes. Even in a year with no scheduled replacement, an inspection catches brake corrosion, suspension wear, coolant loss and tyre problems before they become expensive. The absence of an oil change is not the absence of a reason to visit.

Will skipping maintenance void my battery warranty? It can. Manufacturers can decline claims where required maintenance wasn’t performed, and battery thermal management depends on coolant service being done on schedule. Keep receipts.

Why do my brake pads last so long? Regenerative braking slows the car by running the motor in reverse, recovering energy in the process. Friction brakes are largely a backup, which is why pads frequently exceed 100,000 miles — and why the fluid and calipers need attention they wouldn’t otherwise get.

Do EVs need coolant? Yes — for the battery and motor rather than an engine. Intervals are long, commonly 100,000 miles or more, but it is not a fluid to ignore. It protects the most expensive component in the car.

Is EV servicing cheaper at a dealer or an independent? Independents are usually cheaper for routine work and increasingly capable of it. Dealers are the right choice for high-voltage work, warranty claims and battery diagnostics. Using both is normal, not disloyal.

How much should I budget annually? Roughly $150–$400 for scheduled maintenance in a typical year, plus tyres when they’re due — which for many EV owners arrives sooner than they’re used to. The EPA and DOE’s FuelEconomy.gov lets you compare ownership costs for specific models.

The short version

An EV asks for tyre rotations, an annual inspection, a cabin filter, brake fluid on a fixed schedule, and coolant once in a very long while. That’s most of it.

Maintenance savings cover roughly two thirds of the higher EV insurance premium, which is the other side of the same ledger.

The two items to actually diarise are brake fluid and the annual inspection, because nothing in an EV will remind you they’re due. Everything else largely takes care of itself — which is exactly why the few things that don’t are the ones that catch people out.
