Most EV charging guides answer in cents per kWh, which is a unit nobody budgets in. You budget in months — what lands on the bill, and how much bigger it is than last month’s.
So here it is in months. The typical figure is about $61, and the two things that move it most are your state and your right foot.
The baseline: $61 a month
Start with a mid-size EV returning 3.3 miles per kWh, driven 1,000 miles a month — close to the US average of around 13,500 miles a year.
That needs about 303 kWh at the battery. Add roughly 10% for charging losses — the energy that goes into AC-to-DC conversion and thermal management rather than the pack — and you’re drawing about 333 kWh from the wall. At the US average residential rate of 18.44 cents, that’s $61.42 a month.
The losses matter. Skip them and you’d calculate $55.87, understating your real bill by about 10% every month. Your utility meters what leaves the wall, not what reaches the battery.

Charging cost scales almost perfectly with mileage, which is worth noting because most ownership costs don’t. Insurance, depreciation and the purchase price barely move whether you drive 500 miles a month or 1,500 — so the more you drive, the more the EV’s advantage compounds.
By where you live

An Idaho driver pays $41 a month. A Hawaii driver pays $173 for exactly the same driving. That’s the single largest variable in this entire calculation, and it’s the one you can’t do anything about — no charger, no driving technique and no car choice closes a four-fold gap. By what you drive
Efficiency varies more across EVs than people expect. At the US average rate and 1,000 miles a month:

An electric truck costs roughly double an efficient sedan to charge. It still beats its petrol equivalent — an 18 mpg truck costs about $192 a month at $3.45 a gallon — but “EVs are cheap to run” is a much weaker statement for a 2.0 mi/kWh truck in New York than for a 4.0 mi/kWh sedan in Idaho.

At the national average, home charging runs roughly half the cost of petrol. That’s the headline figure, and it holds for most of the country — but the two exceptions below undo it entirely.
The two things that break these numbers
Public fast charging
Everything above assumes home charging. Run the same 1,000 miles a month on DC fast charging at around $0.42 per kWh and you’re at roughly $127 a month — more than the petrol sedan.
This is the single biggest reason people’s real bills don’t match calculators. If a third of your charging is public fast charging, your monthly cost isn’t $61, it’s closer to $83. Winter
Cold weather raises consumption and raises charging losses at the same time, so the effect compounds. A $61 month can be $75 to $80 in January in a cold climate — and considerably worse on short trips, where cabin heating never gets amortised over enough miles. Budget annually rather than monthly if you live somewhere with real winters. Otherwise the first cold bill feels like something has gone wrong when nothing has.
What it does to your electricity bill
This is the part that surprises new owners, so it’s worth stating plainly.
The average US household uses about 875 kWh a month. Adding 333 kWh for the car is an increase of roughly 38%. At average rates, a bill of around $161 becomes around $223.
Nothing has gone wrong when you see that. You’ve moved a cost from the petrol station to the electricity company, and the total is lower — you’re paying $61 more on electricity to avoid $115 at the pump. But it is not invisible, and anyone telling you an EV “barely shows up on the bill” is describing a car that isn’t being driven much.
One practical consequence: if your utility uses tiered rates, where the price per kWh rises above a usage threshold, an EV can push you into a higher tier — meaning your marginal charging cost is above the average rate, not equal to it. Check your bill’s rate structure, not just the headline number.
Working out your own monthly cost
- Your real rate. Last bill’s total dollars divided by total kWh, including delivery charges and fees. This all-in number is usually higher than the advertised supply rate.
- Your real efficiency. From the car’s trip computer, as a lifetime average. If it shows Wh/mile, divide 1,000 by it — 300 Wh/mile is 3.3 mi/kWh.
- Your monthly mileage. Odometer at the start and end of a month, or your insurance declaration divided by 12.
- Calculate. (Monthly miles ÷ mi per kWh) × 1.1 × your rate.
- Check it. Compare a bill from before the car with a recent one from the same season. The difference is what the car actually costs — and it settles the question better than any calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to charge an EV per month on average? About $61 for a mid-size EV driven 1,000 miles a month at the US average rate. Realistically most owners land between $40 and $80, depending on state and mileage.
Is it cheaper than petrol every month? At home, yes almost everywhere — typically half. On public fast charging, often no. In Hawaii, no. Those are the exceptions, and they’re both real.
Does a Level 2 charger reduce my monthly cost? Not by itself — the price per kWh is identical on Level 1 and Level 2. What it can do is let you fit a full charge inside a short off-peak window, and that does cut the bill. Our Level 1 vs Level 2 guide covers whether you need one at all.
Why is my bill higher than this article says? In order of likelihood: a higher local rate than the state average, more public fast charging than you realised, winter, motorway-heavy driving, or a tiered rate structure pushing your marginal cost up.
Do I pay for charging while the car is parked? A small amount. Cars draw some power to stay awake, maintain battery temperature and run features like sentry or security modes. It’s minor over a month but not zero, and it’s larger in extreme heat or cold.
