“Cheapest EV” usually means one thing on a list: the lowest number on the window sticker. That’s not the same question as which EV actually costs you the least money over five years of ownership — and with the federal tax credit gone, as covered in our 2026 incentives research, the gap between those two numbers matters more than it used to.

A useful reframe, independently confirmed by our own math: divide MSRP by EPA range to get a rough “dollars per mile of range” figure. On this measure, the Bolt comes in around $105 per mile of range, while the Kona Electric SE’s 200-mile range at $32,975 works out to roughly $165 per mile of range — meaning you’re paying substantially more per mile of usable range for the Kona despite it not being dramatically more expensive up front. This doesn’t make the Kona a bad car — trim, features, and brand warranty all factor into a real decision — but it does mean “lowest MSRP” and “best value” aren’t automatically the same conclusion.

Building Your Own 5-Year Running Cost Estimate

Here’s the actual math, worked transparently so you can apply it to any model: take the vehicle’s EPA-rated MPGe, convert it to kWh per 100 miles (33.7 ÷ MPGe × 100), multiply by your local electricity rate to get a cost-per-mile for charging, then add roughly 2.7¢/mile for tires (per our tire research above) to get a rough total running-cost-per-mile. For the Bolt at 120 MPGe and a 16¢/kWh home rate: 33.7÷120×100 = 28.1 kWh/100mi, or 0.281 kWh/mile, times $0.16 = about 4.5¢/mile for charging. Add the 2.7¢/mile tire estimate and you get roughly 7.2¢/mile in combined running cost — which at 12,000 miles/year over 5 years works out to about $4,320, on top of the $27,600 purchase price, before insurance or any other maintenance.
